Raksha Bandhan, also known as Rakhi, is a Hindu festival that celebrates the bond of love and protection between brothers and sisters. The word “Raksha” means “protection,” and “Bandhan” means “bond” or “tie.” This festival is observed on the full moon day in the Hindu month of Shravana, which usually falls in July or August.

The main ritual of Raksha Bandhan involves a sister tying a sacred thread, called a “Rakhi,” around her brother’s wrist. The Rakhi symbolizes the sister’s love and prayers for her brother’s well-being, and in return, the brother promises to protect and support his sister. This exchange is accompanied by the exchange of gifts, sweets, and blessings.

The day typically begins with a family gathering, where the sister performs a short puja (prayer ceremony) to invoke the blessings of the gods for her brother’s long life and prosperity. She applies a tilak (a mark made with vermillion) on her brother’s forehead and ties the Rakhi on his wrist. In return, the brother gives his sister a gift and promises to safeguard her.

Raksha Bandhan is not limited to biological siblings and can also be observed between cousins, close friends, or any relationship where there is a brotherly or protective bond. It serves as a beautiful expression of love, care, and the importance of family ties in Indian culture.
